Now a ton of you have seen that I use my charger a ton. It isn't just because it's a cheap way to win but when you think about it, you can not just mindlessly charge lock and pray to hit. That method will most likely cost you a few duels. This guide will show you a way that can really make an easy build to kill into a monster.
First we must start with the stats. It is very important to have a ton of life in PvP.
Strength - only as much to wield items
Dexterity - If you want to go Max Block, add it
Vita - all stats you didn't use up
Energy - None. You can get a ton of mana through potions and items.
Now we will do our skills. We will have a look at the Combat Skills. These are by far the meat and potatoes of any paladin build. Smite is my favorite Paladin skill as it has great accuracy.
Combat skills:
Charge - 20
Smite - 20
Holy Shield - 20
Holy bolt - 1
Hammer - 1
Now we are gonna have a look at the Offensive Auras. As we all know, Paladins draw power from these. Might is important to any charge as you'll get 20% more damage for point you put into it. Fanaticism is very important for smiters as the IAS is very helpful.
Might - 20
Blessed aim - Any remaining to give small AR boosts.
Concentration - 1
Fanaticism - 20
I'm gonna be honest with you, I never use any Defensive Auras. But now we are coming into the fun part. The gear making!
Helm - Personally, I'd go with the Crown of Ages because it has 15% DR and 2 sockets for upgrades. The 30% FHR boost is also a big help.
Gloves - Just out of preference I use a rare set with the following affixes. I add stats to cover the requirements for weapons and shields
Prefixes
1. 20 AR
2. 30 Poison resist
3. 40 Mana
Suffixes
1. 15 Strength
2. 15 Dexterity
3. 20 Ias
Belt - I would go with Dungos for the FHR, Vita, and DR%. Siggards is also an alternative for the 20% DR and the 20 to all resists.
Shield - This one is a bit debatable in the D2 community. I personally use 1 of 3 shields.
HoZ UP - for the added skills and Strength
'Spirit' Sacred Rondache - Adds 2 to all skills and has a good damage range
Jewelers Sacred Rondache of the Whale - Because it can have a base resistance bonus and the Enhanced Damage also stacks to smite. I'd put 4x 40% ED, 20 life jewels myself.
Weapon - I think we can all agree that a 'Grief' Zerker axe is the way to go
Armor - Enigma is the best in my opinion due to the skills and strength bonuses.
Boots - I'd go with the Gore Riders due to the 15% deadly strike on charging.
Amulet - I'd go rare all the way. I would focus a ton on both damage and life for a good balance
Prefixes
1. 2 Paladin skills
2. 20 to AR
3. 30 To all Resist
Suffixes
1. 30 Strength
2. 60 life
3. 10 rep
Rings - I'd go rare all the way with the following affixes. Charging takes a ton of mana, so I put 90 on to cover that. Adding the Dexterity can really help with the Max block.
Prefixes
1. 120 AR
2. 90 mana
3. 11 to all resist
Suffixes
1. 20 Strength
2. 15 Dexterity
3. 40 life
Charms - Okay, extra boosts are a MUST HAVE for any good build. For charms, I always recommend Annihilus and Helfire torch. As far as the rest. It would be a good idea to fill up with 3,20,20's in a regular match up. Against a Sin or a Sorc, I'd use at least half the inventory of 20,5's.
As I stated earlier, mindlessly charge-locking is suicide. A few strategies for playing this build is to wait to see an opening and then charge and switch to smite on your preferred hotkey. The best timing for a charge is hard to predict because all players are different. I will post some videos of me using Nightmare to give ideas of the best time to charge and enemy. Remember, timing is very important and I am still training him more.
